Abstract
The rapid growth of infrastructure development in The Gambia has increased the demand for construction materials, resulting in expanded quarrying activities and associated environmental concerns. Although quarry operations contribute to economic growth and employment generation, they often cause land degradation, dust emissions, noise pollution, vegetation loss, and inefficient utilization of natural resources. This study assessed sustainable mining and quarrying practices at Bullock Quarry in The Gambia, with emphasis on improving resource efficiency and strengthening environmental resilience. A mixed-methods case study approach was employed using primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations involving quarry workers, management representatives, and surrounding community members, while secondary data were obtained from scientific literature, environmental reports, and relevant policy documents. The findings indicated that Bullock Quarry significantly contributes to the supply of construction aggregates and local economic activities but faces challenges related to environmental degradation, waste management, dust control, and limited land rehabilitation practices. The study revealed that the adoption of efficient extraction techniques, improved waste management, water conservation, environmental monitoring, and progressive ecosystem restoration can enhance operational efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. The results further highlighted the importance of stakeholder participation and effective environmental management systems in achieving sustainable quarry operations. The study concludes that integrating sustainable resource management practices into quarry operations is essential for balancing economic development with environmental protection and ensuring long-term ecological resilience in The Gambia’s mining and quarrying sector.
