Desiree Pantalone, MD, is a senior Italian surgeon and trauma specialist based at Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Careggi and affiliated with the University of Florence. She earned her MD with highest honors from the University of Florence and completed advanced training in General, Vascular, Hepatobiliary, and Minimally Invasive Surgery, along with robotic surgery certification. She is ATLS- and ATOM-certified and has served as an instructor for advanced trauma operative management through the American College of Surgeons. Pantalone is a Consultant in Emergency and Acute Care Surgery at the Level 1 Trauma Center in Florence, with extensive experience in complex trauma, hepatobiliary surgery, and colorectal surgery. Her academic career includes appointments within the Department of Experimental and Clinical Medicine at the University of Florence, alongside international research collaborations in the United States and Europe. Internationally recognized for her pioneering work in space surgery and extreme environment medicine, she has led and contributed to research projects with the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency, focusing on wound healing, robotics, and trauma care in microgravity. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of multiple European and international surgical societies. Her recent scientific contributions explore robotic surgery, artificial intelligence in emergency care, and surgical management in space missions.
