Abstract

Osteochondral defects (OCDs) present a significant challenge in orthopedics, as they involve simultaneous damage to cartilage and underlying bone. Current clinical options remain limited, underscoring the need for innovative regenerative solutions. This work introduces a biphasic scaffold, designed using triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) gyroid architectures, as a novel strategy for osteochondral repair. The scaffolds were fabricated from polylactic acid (PLA) using fused deposition modeling (FDM), enabling precise replication of complex anatomical interfaces. Preliminary investigation demonstrates that the biphasic gyroid scaffolds exhibit enhanced mechanical integrity and biodegradability. These properties suggest great potential for improving osteochondral regeneration compared to conventional scaffold designs. By integrating advanced additive manufacturing techniques with biomimetic design, this study indicates a pathway toward next-generation 3D scaffolds for orthopedic tissue engineering, with a specific focus on bone and cartilage regeneration.
