Abstract

IPAS is a global hub of photonics research, creating transformational new approaches to sensing.

Many of the challenges we face as a society can only be solved by pursuing a transdisciplinary approach to science. The Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) at Adelaide University has been created to bring together 350 experimental physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers, biologists, experimentally driven theoretical scientists and medical researchers to create new sensing and measurement technologies.

By engaging directly with priority industries, we identify the measurement problems that, once solved, can transform productivity and safety. Leveraging our core capabilities, we bring together interdisciplinary teams to tackle these challenges through a wide range of funded research projects.

By combining world-class research with industry expertise, we co-develop technologies that improve productivity, create new opportunities, and deliver tangible competitive advantage.

This talk will be a series of case studies of sucessful projects developing sensing technology with industry partners.

Biography

Piers has been Institute Manager of the Institute for Photonics & Advanced Sensing (IPAS) at the University of Adelaide since July 2009. He leads the commercialisation activity of the Institute and works with the scientific teams to help them develop their products, identify industrial partners and funding streams. He has secured over $100m in research funding.

Past roles have included Business and Marketing Manager for Acambis a developer of vaccines based in Cambridge UK and the US. He started his career as business development manager and Company Secretary of Roslin-Biomed the company who created ‘Dolly’ the cloned sheep.
