Hui-Shen Shen is a Professor of Applied Mechanics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research interests include elastic stability theory and, in general, non-linear response of beams, plates and shells made of functionally graded materials, carbon nanotube reinforced composites, graphene reinforced composites and meta-materials. His pioneering works on the development of boundary layer theory and the two-step perturbation approach have had a major impact and have led to new research developments and applications. He has published over 370 journal papers, including 19 “highly cited papers”. His research publications have  been widely cited in the areas of mechanics of materials and structures. He has achieved an
ISI H-Index of 76 (as of Dec 2025) and citations are over 26500. His Scopus H-Index is 78 and citations are over 23500. His name is listed in the “Most Cited Researchers Global Ranking of Academic Subjects” in both mechanical and civil engineering by ARWU (Academic Ranking of World Universities) in 2016. He has also been listed by Elsevier as a “Most Cited Chinese Researcher” in mechanical engineering and mechanics for 12 consecutive years from 2014 to 2025. He was also selected as World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University for 8 consecutive years from 2017 to 2024. He has also been ranked #100 among Best Scientists in the field of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering for 2023 by Research.com. In 2023, he has also achieved the Number 5 lifetime ranking among all scholars worldwide in Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering ranked by ScholarGPS. He also published three books entitled “Functionally Graded Materials: Nonlinear Analysis of Plates and Shells” (CRC Press, 2009), “A Two-Step Perturbation Method in Nonlinear Analysis of Beams, Plates and Shells” (John Wiley & Sons Inc, 2013), and “Postbuckling Behavior of Plates and Shells” (World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd, 2017). These three books provide a comprehensive overview of the author’s original works which include significant contributions to the nonlinear analysis of beams, plates and shells. Currently, he serves on the editorial boards of the “International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics” (ISSN: 0219-4554), the “Journal of Strain Analysis for Engineering Design” (ISSN: 0309-3247), the “Composite Structures” (ISSN: 0263-8223), the “Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures” (ISSN: 1537-6494), the “Curved and Layered Structures” (ISSN: 2353-7396), the “Scientific Reports” (ISSN: 2045-2322), and “Thin-Walled Structures (ISSN: 0263-8231)
