Dr. Annock Gabriel Chiwona is a distinguished geoscientist currently serving as Deputy Director of the Geological Survey Department of Malawi. His expertise encompasses agrominerals, mineral exploration, geohazards, and the application of geoscientific technologies for climate change solutions. Dr. Chiwona earned his Ph.D. in Geosciences from Newcastle University, where his research focused on alternative sustainable potassium fertilizer production using nepheline syenites. A highly decorated researcher, he holds the UK’s Global Talent Award and an Elsevier award for his publications in the geosciences. Furthermore, he is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and an Associate Fellow of the UK’s Higher Education Academy. Beyond his primary role, Dr. Chiwona advises the Malawi Government as a member of the Presidential Task-Force on Fertilisers and represents Malawi on international committee for critical raw materials. He also collaborates with the Sustainable Minerals Institute, of University of Queensland, Australia, driving high-impact research for Malawi’s mineral security for food security, and climate-resilient disaster management.
