Biography :
Magdalini Matziari is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), China. She joined the university in 2012 and has since been actively involved in teaching, research, and academic leadership. She obtained her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry in 2001 from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, following an MSc (1999) and a Chemistry degree from the University of Ioannina.
Her research expertise lies in medicinal chemistry, organic synthesis, and drug design, with a strong focus on the development of phosphorus-based enzyme inhibitors and peptide analogues. Her work primarily targets major diseases, including HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, through the design of small-molecule inhibitors and innovative drug delivery systems. Dr. Matziari has contributed significantly to the field of phosphinic peptide chemistry, developing compounds that act as potent and selective enzyme inhibitors with potential therapeutic applications in conditions such as viral infections, cancer, and metabolic diseases.
In recognition of her scientific contributions, she received the UNESCO–L’Oréal “For Women in Science” National Award in 2006. Her academic roles include serving as Programme Director for postgraduate research programs and supervising numerous PhD and master’s students. She continues to contribute to global research through publications, conference presentations, and international collaborations in drug discovery and chemical sciences.
