Biography
Dr. Stefano Savinelli, MD is a clinical researcher and academic specializing in infectious diseases. He currently serves as a Clinical Lecturer/Assistant Professor at the University College Dublin (UCD) School of Medicine and is affiliated with the Department of Infectious Diseases at St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Savinelli works clinically as a Consultant in Infectious Diseases at both St. Vincent’s University Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin. He is an active member of the UCD Centre for Experimental Pathogen Host Research (CEPHR), where he contributes to translational research aimed at improving the understanding and management of infectious diseases.
His research portfolio focuses on the long-term metabolic, immunological, and psychological consequences of viral infections. In the field of HIV/AIDS, Dr. Savinelli has conducted extensive research on metabolic complications associated with modern antiretroviral therapy, with particular emphasis on the effects of Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (InSTIs) on weight gain, lipid metabolism, glucose regulation, and bone health. Dr. Savinelli has also made significant contributions to the study of Long COVID, authoring scholarly reviews on the pathogenesis and clinical phenotypes of post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). His work explores immune dysregulation and its association with psychological distress and cognitive impairment. Additionally, his recent research in Mpox includes the development of quantitative immunoassays capable of distinguishing between infection-induced and vaccine-induced immunity.
Alongside his academic and clinical roles, Dr. Savinelli is actively involved in professional leadership and advocacy. He serves as the Social Media and Public Relations Officer for the Infectious Diseases Society of Ireland (IDSI) and has participated in clinical trials evaluating treatments for severe COVID-19, including immunomodulatory therapies such as tocilizumab. Through his combined clinical expertise, research activity, and leadership engagement, Dr. Savinelli continues to contribute meaningfully to advancements in infectious disease medicine and public health.
