Abstract

Skin aging is a complex biological process influenced by intrinsic aging, environmental exposure, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and progressive changes in the extracellular matrix. While conventional dermatological and aesthetic interventions remain important in skin rejuvenation, growing interest in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) reflects a shift towards holistic, preventive and long-term approaches to skin health.

This presentation examines the emerging role of CAM in anti-aging skin care, with particular focus on Traditional Chinese medicine-informed practices, acupuncture, gua sha, herbal medicine and other non-invasive approaches. Rather than positioning CAM as an alternative to evidence-based dermatological care, an integrative approach considers how selected traditional practices may complement contemporary strategies for promoting skin health and resilience.

The presentation will explore potential mechanisms underlying these approaches, including effects on microcirculation, inflammation, oxidative stress, tissue repair, and the skin–mind connection. It will also address critical considerations surrounding evidence, treatment standardization, product quality, safety, practitioner competency, and integration with conventional aesthetic procedures.

Moving beyond the pursuit of younger-looking skin, skin longevity offers a broader paradigm focused on maintaining skin function, resilience and quality throughout the lifespan. The future of CAM in anti-aging care should therefore be guided by the convergence of traditional knowledge, scientific evidence, and patient-centered practice.
