{"id":5015,"date":"2026-01-12T08:36:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T08:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cognitionconferences.com\/plantscience\/?post_type=speaker&#038;p=5015"},"modified":"2026-01-12T10:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T10:16:11","slug":"anjali-prashad","status":"publish","type":"speaker","link":"https:\/\/cognitionconferences.com\/plantscience\/speaker\/anjali-prashad\/","title":{"rendered":"Anjali Prashad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Abstract\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The adoption of molecularly modified (MM) crops\u2014encompassing genetically modified (GM) and newer gene-editing technologies\u2014has become a focal point in the discourse on sustainable agriculture. Related literature reports that adoption of GM insect\u2010resistant and herbicide\u2010tolerant crops resulted in significant reductions in GHG emissions from on\u2011farm fuel use and facilitated switching to reduced tillage and no\u2011tillage systems (Brookes, 2022). Similarly, fuel savings and soil carbon retention are key channels, such as- reduced tillage saves fuel, which reduces CO\u2082 emissions from farm operations; no\u2010till \/ reduced tillage leads to increased soil organic carbon storage. Also, there is evidence of increased carbon sequestration associated with adoption of herbicide\u2011tolerant GM crops in Canada. However, not all cases explored so far show positive results of GM crop adoption. For instance Huang, K &amp; You, Y (2024) , finds that GM crops have\u00a0increased\u00a0total agricultural carbon emissions by \u2248\u00a07.4%\u00a0and carbon\u2010emission intensity of crops by \u2248\u00a09.4%,\u00a0because of expansion into marginal lands which require more inputs like fertilizer and energy. Given the heterogeneity of baseline farming and cultivation practices, it is important to explore the final benefits of widening MM-crop adoption vis-\u00e0-vis whether it increases or decreases carbon emission. This discussion, attempt to examine the MM-crop adoption rate and asssociated carbon emission intensity across a panel of selected countries and MM-crops.
