PLHIV face complex barriers, including persistent stigma, widespread misinformation, and limited access to adequate psychosocial support. However, members understanding and perception on the prevention of new HIV transmission needed to be locally evaluated as many interventions done did not focus on the real-life experience of members towards the prevention of HIV.

This study adopted a mixed-methods research study design. A purposive and random sampling technique was used to select 21 participants and 224 respondents respectively. Data were collected using an interview guide and a validated semi- structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. Knowledge of support group on the prevention of new transmission of HIV (SGNTHIV) was measured. The perception of support group on SGNTHIV was assessed. Also, the preventive practices on the new transmission of HIV were assessed.

Support groups showed understanding of SGNTHIV and perception was good. Barriers like transport costs, stigma, and work conflicts limit participation, necessitating aid and clinic partnerships. Preventive practices had a statistically significant association with age. Knowledge of SGNTHIV had a statistically significant association with perception among HIV support group members, and had a statistically significant association with the level of education and perception among HIV support group members. Binary logistic regression revealed that age is a predictor of good preventive practices. (OR 6.7 CI: 2.3-19.6) Those with good perception were significantly less likely to have good knowledge, 95% (OR 0.2, CI: 0.08-0.8,).

Biography:

Adebiyi Oluseun is a frontline Gender Based Violence responder, HIV advocate, and Community Development practitoner based in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
