Abstract
\n<\/span><\/strong>
\nInterprofessional Education (IPE) is increasingly recognised as a transformative approach to strengthening healthcare delivery through enhanced collaboration, communication, and shared learning among healthcare professionals. In South Africa\u2019s public healthcare context marked by complex workloads, skill shortages, and fragmented care effective teamwork is essential for improved service delivery and patient outcomes. This study builds upon a phenomenological investigation that explored healthcare professionals\u2019 experiences and perceptions of IPE as a strategy to enhance clinical competence. Using secondary thematic synthesis, the study developed a thematic framework illustrating how IPE serves as a catalyst for transformative care delivery in public healthcare settings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Data were drawn from in-depth interviews conducted across four public hospitals in Gauteng Province with multidisciplinary professionals, including nurses, physicians, therapists, and pharmacists. Through iterative thematic analysis and synthesis, six interrelated themes were consolidated: (1) role clarity and understanding of professional boundaries; (2) mutual respect and trust; (3) effective communication; (4) teamwork and collaboration; (5) development of collective clinical competence; and (6) patient-centred and systems-oriented care. These themes were integrated into a conceptual model depicting the mechanisms through which IPE fosters attitudinal, behavioural, and organisational transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The framework demonstrates that IPE enhances professional relationships, strengthens shared decision-making, and promotes integrated service delivery ultimately improving clinical competence and patient outcomes. Moreover, it positions IPE not only as an educational intervention but as a strategic mechanism for organisational learning and sustainable health system improvement. The findings provide an evidence-based foundation for embedding IPE into professional development programmes and policy frameworks aimed at advancing quality, safety, and equity in South African healthcare.<\/span><\/p>\n
